Acura ZDX Gets The Hook

There is a reason why Acura was offering up to $12,000 off a new ZDX a while back: because it wasn’t selling.

And now the inevitable has happened, Acura has finally given it the axe, despite giving it some styling and technology upgrades for the 2013 model year. A spokesperson for Acura said that the ZDX is still a great vehicle worthy of upgrades as one last hurrah, but they are going to focus their time and money on their “core” products such as the TL and RDX which is really just a nice way of saying that the ZDX was a good try but no dice.

Acura originally developed the ZDX to be a direct competitor with the BMW X6 when BMW saw unexpected success with its segment bending crossover. It wasn’t all good news for BMW though as the hybrid version of the X6 turned out to be a sales dud. Since then Audi has been reportedly working on an X6 competitor with Mercedes-Benz also toying with the idea. Apparently Acura’s failed attempt is not phasing them.

I reviewed the ZDX a while back and found it to be capable, but ultimately not quite as good as the X6 is. Which is a bit like saying a lion in a dress isn’t quite as crazy as an elephant dressed as the tooth fairy.

Will you miss the ZDX?
