Nissan To Axe Xterra From Lineup

By Kevin Harrison

Are you a fan of body on frame SUV’s? Well your choice for a new one just got even smaller with Nissan announcing the discontinuation of the Xterra after 2015.

Declining sales and archaic technology are responsible for putting the final nail in the Xterra’s coffin.

Last year, Nissan sold just shy of 1,000 iterations of the Xterra in Canada. It has not been significantly updated since 2005. Updating the Xterra with a new interior and exterior design, as well as updating its safety and emissions requirement would prove to be too costly for the amount that they are selling.

The Xterra is one of the last few body-on frame SUV’s – a dying market that’s likely due to their inherhant poor fuel efficiency and unfavourable driving dynamics. Besides, the Xterra’s boxy design doesn’t fit with Nissan’s new corporate swoopy design language anymore.

The only good news for hardcore SUV enthusiasts is that you can now likely get an even better deal on an already heavily discounted new Xterra.

Personally, I always had a bit of a soft spot for the Xterra when it originally debuted its fun yet rugged looks back in 2000. I’m not even ashamed to admit that I personally liked the bright yellow ones best.

What do you think of Nissan’s move to kill the Xterra? Will you miss it?
