Got Heated Seats? Watch Out For 'Toasted Skin Syndrome'

In pretty much every part of the country, heated seats are fairly necessarily and appreciated during winter months. However as it turns out, if you overuse your seat warmers that could lead to a condition called ‘toasted skin syndrome’ doctors warn.

Although the name suggests otherwise, toasted skin syndrome actually isn’t a burn. It usually comes in the form of an irritating rash.

“Sometimes people don’t initially make the connection between the rash and the exposure, but based on the pattern you can figure out that it’s probably from heat,” said Jennifer Stein, a professor of dermatology at New York University Langone Medical Center, who was not involved in the studies.

While toasted skin syndrome isn’t relatively serious, it’s definitely something to be avoided as skin discolouration can persist for months. The best way to do so is just to turn down the setting on your heated seats. Most cars that come with heated seats have multiple settings, so it’s best to leave them on the lowest setting or turn them down to the lower settings once they’ve been on for a while.
