Remember when horsepower wars used to be a big thing in the auto industry? Well now it seems to have been replaced by transmission wars -specifically which automaker can get the most gears into a transmission.
When the Germans came out with 7 and 8 speeds a few years ago, people complained that that was too many. Since then Chrysler has developed a 9-speed automatic and now GM has just confirmed they are working on a 10-speed automatic.
Perhaps even more surprising than that is GM is working with arch rival Ford to develop the transmission.
The project is expected to cost $1.3 billion into five different manufacturing plants along with a new V6 and an updated six-speed automatic.
What do you think of a 10-speed automatic? How many gears is too many?
