Ferrari 458 Italia Recalled Because Humans In Trunk Cannot Escape

This is a recall you don’t hear about every day. Or at all, really.

Ferrari is recalling its iconic 458 Italia due to the simple fact that you will not be able to escape should an 458 Italia owner decide your life could garner up some decent ransom money.

You’d be forgiven if you’ve never noticed that there is a latch on the inside of the trunk of most vehicles which, when pulled, opens the trunk. This is made specifically so you can escape should you literally become a trunk monkey.

The 458 Italia has such a latch but the issue is that it will not open when the car is stationary aka the most ideal time to make your escape. Presumably it will open when the car is in motion. While it would look super bad-ass to escape the trunk of a Ferrari in motion, it likely isn’t advisable and Ferrari of course would not want you to sue them because of it.

Said more officially, “In the event an individual is trapped in the trunk and the latch system does not release the trunk lid, it increases the risk of personal injury or possibly death,” says the NSHBA.

The pic above shows just how big the trunk is of an actual 458 Italia. Given that the only way you’d likely be able to fit is if you were chopped up into a few pieces, I’m not quite sure the recall is strictly necessary but, better safe than sorry.
