Told Ya! Ford Admits Electric Mustang In The Cards

Two years ago, Car Driven exclusively broke the news to the world that Ford was considering making an all-electric version of their infamous pony car.

My source at the time witnessed the prototype at an undisclosed Ford facility and when said source tried to snap a pic, Ford reacted the way Kanye West reacts to the paparazzi.

Now, though, Ford is admitting that the electric Mustang is indeed in the cards along with other efficient technology such as hybrids and diesel.

They’ve already announced a new Ecoboost engine for 2015, but “given where we need to go with fuel consumption we are looking at all our options,” said a Ford spokesperson.

As I mentioned in my post two years ago, an electric Mustang isn’t as crazy as it seems what with the Tesla Roadster, Audi E-Tron and BMW i8 already in the works. It would lend legitimate competition to the performance electric segment which virtually has no competitors as it is and would give Ford the opportunity to take the first swing at the ‘cheaper’ end of the segment.

And yes, muscle car enthusiasts are a traditional and outspoken bunch and they will cry blasphemy from the hills all they’d like, but as long as a V8 and even a V6 is still available I think Ford should be commended for pushing boundaries a bit.

What do you think of the idea of an all-electric Mustang?
