Volvo Debut’s Concept Coupe, Previews New Design Direction

Volvo has debuted one of three concept cars coming in the near future with the Concept Coupe.

Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group, apparently was tired of hearing Volvo linked to words such as ‘vanilla’ (which, for the record is a delicious flavour in my opinion, but I digress) so he wanted to design something that not only caught the eye but also to showcase the brand’s new design direction, called Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

SPA gives “great proportions that are important to achieve a premium look,” said Ingenlath. ““The larger bonnet with its new topography, the beltline spanning an elegant bow along the whole car and the sharpened shoulder connecting with the new rear light are other important design signatures.”

Even though Volvo is calling the Concept Coupe a successor to the famous P1800, it is still just a design exercise to showcase what SPA is and how next generation Volvo’s will look, starting with the XC90 coming next year.

What do you think of Volvo’s new design direction?
