To those of you that can likely afford the Porsche 918 concept you see above and wrote in to Porsche to express your interest, give yourselves a pat on the back.

It’s because of you that Porsche now has a business case to actually build the 918. We mentioned a while back that Porsche would only consider building it if there was interest, so we pushed for people to write in. And it worked.

Porsche required “1,000 seriously interested people to build a business case” said the development chief for Porsche, Wolfgang Duerheimer. To date, they have 900 seriously interested people with the expectation of that number growing beyond 1,000.

Even if they somehow don’t reach that magic 1,000 number, Porsche is likely to build the 918 anyway. They built the Carerra GT afterall and that car, even though it isn’t around today, really set the benchmark in the hypercar world.

No doubt the 918′s supposed 0-100 in 3.2 seconds and its 3 L per 100 kms rating will also be benchmarking.

This is one of the many reasons why we adore Porsche.

The 918 concept stole the show at Geneva this year. A supercar that does 0-100 in only 3.2 seconds, all while being able to acheive 3 L/100 kms is nothing short of impressive. Porsche says it is likely faster than the old Carrera GT supercar. But it is just a concept afterall.

However Porsche says there’s a good possibility of them actually building the 918 thanks to all the positive feedback they have received so far.

“There is no one inside Porsche who doesn’t want to build the 918. The response has been marvelous; we will ask buyers to sign letters of intent,” said CEO Michael Macht.

If they get enough letters of intent, that will pretty much give the 918 the green light for production. So, if you have Porsche type money, start writing!

Granted there is likely some catch to the effect of it not being able to achieve 3l/100kms while it’s doing 0-100 in 3.2 seconds, but still, it is quite impressive nevertheless.

This plug-in concept will feature a V8 producing 500 horsepower matched to an electric motor that produces 218 horsepower for a combined horsepower rating of 718. The 918 Spyder concept operates like any other parallel hybrid where the gas and electric motor can work in conjunction with each other or indepentendly depending on the driving conditions. The car also features electric drive (E-Drive) which means it can travel up to 25 kilometres on the electric motor alone.

On the environmental end, Porsche claims a CO2 raiting of just 70 grams per kilometer.

Except to see many more supercars attempting to acheive performance yet efficiency as BMW is hoping to pull off a similar trick with its production version of its Vision EfficientDynamics concept and with Ferrari expecting to introduce a hybrid version of its 599 at Geneva very shortly.
