  • Oh Hi: 2013 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe

Posted on December 10th, 2011 admin No comments

BMW is finally throwing its hat into the so-called four door coupe ring. Started by Mercedes-Benz with the CLS and answered by Audi with the A7, the 6-Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s first shot in the segment.

Obviously, the 6-series Gran Coupe is based on the recently introduced 6-Series coupe, but this new sedan is actually 4.4 inches longer, likely to make way for the extra doors and, hopefully, more rear leg room. The overall design retains the sleekness of the coupe and for the most part stays true to the concept. It’s a wonder why the production version took so long to show its face.

The Gran Coupe will come with two engine choices. The first offering will be in the form of a 640i which will get a twin turo 3.0 litre inline six which will make 315 horses and 330 pound foot torque.  The estimated 0-100 run is about 5.4 seconds.

A 650i variant will follow later on with optional all-wheel drive and a 4.4. litre V8 under the hood, also twin turbocharged. The 650i will get from 0-100 in an estimated 4.6 seconds thanks to the unit’s 445 horsepower and 480 pound foot torque.

Both the 640i and 650i will be mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission.

An M-sport packing will be available at launch which includes front and rear facia skirts along with side skirts. It also gets LED fog lights, black exhaust tips, 19 or 20 inch wheels, M paint, an M steering wheels, sport seats and a sport trimmed interior.

So the obvious question now remains: which would you choose if it was your money? The Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Audi A7 or the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe?

  • 2012 BMW 6-Series By Prior Design

Posted on March 22nd, 2011 admin No comments

Less than a week since the 2012 BMW 6-series was officially introduced to the world, tuning company Prior Design has already got its hands on making the 6-series look that much better.

The LED running lamps are now integrated into the air intakes, there’s a lower lip spoiler, a new bonnet with air vents, flared fenders, new side skirts, as well as carbon fiber exhaust tips and a small diffuser. Oh and those marvelous looking black rims which are estimated to be 20 inchers.

Don’t think this modded 6-series is just all show, however. Prior Design usually does some performance modding along with their cosmetic changes, however details are unreleased at the moment.

For now, I’m happy just staring at this thing. Looks fantastic!

Ladies and gentlemen say hello to the third generation 6-series coupe.

BMW, in a bit of an odd move, showcased the production 6-series cabriolet a few months back but this is the first time we’ve seen official pics of the coupe.

There are no real surprises considering we’ve already seen the cabriolet, but my goodness is it ever nice to look at.

So far the only engine choice is BMW’s superb 4.4 litre V8 which makes 400 horsepower and 450 pound feet of torque which is good enough for a 4.8 second 0-100 sprint time. BMW’s eight speed automatic is available, but don’t worry a proper six-speed manual is also in the cards for us to prefer to row our own gears. Thanks for that BMW!

A host of luxury and tech features are available including a 10 inch high res screen, lane departure warning, rear on top view cameras and a 3D heads up display.

But I’m willing to guess you won’t care about any of that stuff when you take this thing out for a weekend cruise. The 6-series really is the ultimate GT car!

Pricing has yet to be announce but expect it in the $90,000 range. Also expect an M6 to follow, likely after the 2012 M5 bows its brow to the world.

Okay, technically this is still a concept, but clearly it’s 95% ready for production. I’m not quite sure why BMW has decided to start doing this of late – calling a car that’s obviously ready for production a concept (remember the Gran Coupe Concept?), but it seems to be BMW’s new theme so we’ll just ride with it. The production version of the 6-series will apparently be slightly lowered and slightly wider, which is fine with me.

The new 6-series is very much done with the Bangle era. There is an array of LED’s up front and behind, with the 6-series taking on more of a family resemblance.

Expect power to come from different naturally aspirated and turbocharged inline sixes. When the M6 comes out, it will likely have the same V8 that the new M5 is going to get.

More pics, plus interior shot after the jump.

UPDATE: Video now added after the jump. Don’t get too excited though, the 6-series isn’t in motion in the video or anything.

  • Oh Hi: Next Generation BMW 6-Series

Posted on April 12th, 2010 admin No comments

The next generation BMW 6-Series has been caught oot and aboot in Germany. Escorted by an aray of Mini Coopers, the new 6 managed to make its way to a car wash which allowed us to see and hear the big coupe fairly well.

Rumours circulating around the internet were indicating that the new 6 would get the same engines from the new 7-series, and judging by the sound of the exhaust, those rumours would seem to be true. It’s likely that they could get tuned a bit differently however.

The overall design shows a much more conservative look than the current Bangled design. The front lights seem to be similar to those on the 5-Series GT. Let’s hope they do something a little nicer with those wheels.
