Vancouver Named Worst In Canada For Traffic Congestion

Vancouverites now have confirmation of what most of them have suspected for a long time. Their traffic congestion is the worst in Canada and even among the worst in North America.

Popular GPS manufacturer, Tom Tom, has released its findings based on how quickly traffic moves along on average. They then compared those findings to how quickly traffic moves when roads are congestion free.

“When people are driving on the Vancouver road network, their travel time will be 30 per cent longer than it would be when there was no traffic on the road,” said Nick Cohn of TomTom, in an interview with CBC News.

Cohn went on to explain that the lack of a highway network to get into the city is a big reason for the increased congestion.

On a bigger scale Vancouver placed second in North America for the worst congestion just behind Los Angeles.  Other Canadian cities ranked in the index were Toronto (9th), Ottawa (10th), Montreal (12th), Calgary (16th) and Edmonton (23d).

One upside for Vancouver is that it was deemed to have less delay during peak times than Los Angeles, Seattle and Ottawa.

The city’s transit authority sees the lack of highway access as a good thing because it “livability” and increases the potential for more residential areas.
