Mazda Takes ‘Most Fuel Efficient Automaker’ Accolade

You’d be forgiven if you were to choose Toyota, Honda or Ford as your guess for the most efficient automaker. They all offer a variety of hybrids and electric vehicles. But you’d also be wrong.

The most fuel efficient automaker is the one with no electric vehicles or hybrids: Mazda

According to the EPA, Mazda’s average fuel efficiency across its lineup is 27.5 MPG (8.5 L/100 kms). That edges out Honda who is in second place with 27 MPG (8.7 L/100 kms) and third place Toyota who came in at 25 MPG (9.4 L/100 kms).

What’s even more surprising is this is actually Mazda’s third year in a row of earning the title.

A big reason for this achievement is Mazda’s investment in SkyActiv engines which essentially fine tunes a regular gas combustion engine for the best fuel efficiency and performance mix. In fact, 75% of Mazdas sold are equipped with a SkyActiv engine. On top of that, the automaker plans on adding clean diesel to its lineup soon for added efficiency.

It should be said that Hyundai and Kia were omitted from the list due to exaggerated fuel efficiency claims, so it’s possible Mazda could get dethroned once the Korean twins get themselves back on the list.
