Honda May Reintroduce Civic Hatchback To North America

A lot of us can certainly remember a time (late 90’s) when Honda Civic hatchbacks were as common as their sedan siblings. But then Honda decided to drop the hatchback version in our market officially a few years ago. It appears the hatch may make its return.

When the Civic gets a new redesign in 2016 (although a substantial redesign of the current version is expected this fall due to high criticism), a top exec for Honda noted that they are considering adding the hatcback back into the North American market.

This would be a step in the right direction since Canadians love small cheap hatchbacks. Not to mention that Honda’s competition is fully aware of our afinity towards them as well as Hyundai, Kia, Ford and Mazda all have hatchback versions of their compact sedans. Obviously, Honda is missing out on a rather large piece of the pie.

But perhaps more importantly is the desperate need to reclaim the accolade Civic being the obvious bencmark in the segment. As alluded to above, critcism of the recently redesigned version has been harsh. In fact Comumer Reports recently included the Civic in their undesirable “five popular cars to avoid” list.

Do you think Civic should bring the Civic’s hatch back?
